2014 Domenica Roussanne Marsanne

The Domenica Roussanne Marsanne is blended from separately fermented varietal parcels, due to the propensity for marsanne to ripen ahead of roussanne.

The hand picked fruit was harvested fully ripe, at around 12.5 beaume, in late march 2012.

A light crushing was followed by pressing in a traditional 1 tonne hydraulic wooden basket press. The juice was handled oxidatively, to ensure colour stability and ageing ability, and cold settled overnight before being transferred to young, but not new, french barriques for fermentation, which proceeded naturally, with wild yeast. This adds richness and body to the wine.

The wine underwent malolactic fermentation, also wild, and then matured on lees until blending for bottling in February 2013. The blend is comprised of 60% roussanne, 35% marsanne and 5% viognier.

The wine was only lightly fined with isinglass and bentonite, in order to maintain some of the important phenolic characteristics typical of the white rhone varieties, providing texture and mouthfeel. No filtration was undertaken.

Tasting Notes

Straw yellow with a tinge of green, the wine delivers an exotic nose of candied lemon, spicy poached pear and honeysuckle. The decadent richness of the roussanne is beautifully foiled by the mineral acidity of marsanne, creating a long and complex palate, with a slight phenolic edge providing textural interest. This is a wine which abundantly displays its Beechworth terroir, enjoyable now, but also capable of aging effortlessly for the next decade.
